For the time, warmth and smiles

I was pleasantly surprised to see a Thank You card from a grateful family. It was addressed to a devoted team of providers who ensured the family have a well-deserved rich experience welcoming their newborn into life.

It read:
“For the time you give, the hearts you warm, the smiles you make, you’re appreciated.”

“Thank you so much! For assisting the delivery of our baby: for encourage us and being there along the way; for your kindness and being super helpful! I wouldn’t be able to do it without you :)

Such gestures of gratefulness never fail to bring a day-long smile to my face.

I just ran into Baby Madelynn and her parents at Starbucks. What a great surprise! Today she is 7 days old.

Seeing her brightened my day! My case in the operating room today got bumped by an emergency caesarean section and I was waiting to resume my surgical day when I came across this lovely family.
I was there for Madelynn’s birth on April 5, 2016.

Delivered on my birthday

Every year I try to be on call at the hospital on my birthday hoping to be present for the birth of another June 8 baby.

Today, it was quiet on the Labor & Delivery floor, which allowed me to celebrate my birthday at home with friends and family but I was still hoping for a June 8 baby. Before the night is over, baby girl Son saw the light at 23:01.

The miracle of birth never seizes to inspire and amaze me even after all those years.

Today is a happy day for me and this baby girl, and a happy birthing day for our mothers.

I share a birthday with this ‘little man’ as his mother calls him. What an amazing gift it is to receive a recent photo of him at age one as we both celebrate our birthdays 36 years apart yet connected by my presence at the miracle of his birth.

Lukas at age 1 year

Here is what his mother wrote me on June 8 2016:
“Hi Dr. Hasan! Happy birthday! You delivered Lukas one year ago on your birthday at Lions Gate! Lukas is now 1 year old! He is healthy and happy and a busy little man. He started crawling at 5 months and has been walking since 9 months! He loves food and books and especially chasing his older brother Wyatt around! Hope you had a wonderful birthday! 🙂

I wanted to catch a baby on my last call day in Vancouver, Canada before I start a new chapter in #Seattle and Easton made it happen.

This adorable little miracle came out crying and breathing in the beauty of life surrounding all of us.

Easton weighed 3,100 grams.

When I thought Easton was the last Baby whose birth I attend in Canada, Arthur was born shortly after.

These photos were taken by Easton’s father and shared here with permission from both parents.

I am so grateful to Ashton’s mom for sending these photos with the following message:

“Hi Doctor! Hope you are doing well. Here are baby Ashton’s pictures. He was born on April 2nd through the emergency c-section you performed. He is growing very well in the 95 percentile. Ashton is so adorable that he makes us smile and laugh everyday. Thanks for delivering him so quickly and safely!”

What an adorable baby! It warms my heart.

First day in USA for Baby boy Ali

Baby Boy Ali was born on this day in USA 🇺🇸. Since the first birth I attended, every birth still feels like a precious little miracle. Tonight’s is no less.

May I confess that I always try to suggest “Hasan” as a name for the newborn, I am yet to succeed. Today the odds were higher, but I missed the mark, yet again.

As baby boy Ali was enjoying his first shower, I could imagine him smile as he opened his eyes and looked up to see our welcoming smiles surrounding him and celebrating his safe arrival.

Disclaimer: Photo taken and posted here with permission from Baby Ali’s parents.

His parents were very grateful and thankful, his father brought all Labor & Delivery staff fresh and hot, mouth-watering Samosas that I really appreciated on this long Sunday.

During the final labor hours, I became acquainted with baby Ali’s parents. We traveled virtually via Google Earth to the birth places of his father and mother. I learned about borders of Somalia 🇸🇴 with Ethiopia 🇪🇹, Kenya 🇰🇪 and Djibouti 🇩🇯 and how they were created randomly and with no consideration to geography, cultures, languages and the peoples. We toured the area in east Africa before returning to Burien and to pushing.

I learned a lot tonight. Beyond the history and geography, I also learned that no matter what, mothers will continue to push, miracles will continue to be born, and hope will continue to be delivered.

His smile is contagious, I look ahead and smile too.

One of the most gratifying aspect of my work is witnessing the birth of a newborn, the gift of life, the most precious little miracles that are so unique yet so common.

It only gets more personal and more precious when I catch a baby on my own birthday, that’s why I like being on Call at the hospital on my birthday.

38 years ago and on this same day, my mother was pushing hard to be ng me to this world. I wish her a very happy birthing day and many more to come Mama.

I was lucky today to attend the birth of Eti.

Every year I look forward to attending the birth of a baby who will share my birthday. I imagine parents telling their kids they share the same birthday with the obstetrician who was at their birth and this thought warms my heart.
